Bluestone Dam & Lake
The Bluestone Dam spans the New River at Hinton forming Bluestone Lake, the third largest lake in West Virginia.
Bluestone Dam is a straight concrete gravity Dam that is 2048 feet long and approximately 165 feet above the streambed.
This Dam project began in 1941, was operational by 1949 and completed in 1952. Since it became operational it has prevented $1.6 Billion in flood damage.
In addition to flood control, the resevoir is an important recreational facility for southern West Virginia. Bluestone Dam and Lake attract over 1.3 million visitors annually. During summer months the lake covers more than 2040 acres and provides boating, fishing and water skiing activities. Bluestone Wildlife Management Area (the 17,632 acres around the Lake) is a great place for picnicking, hunting, biking and camping. For boat information contact Bluestone Marina at 304-466-2628.
Below the Dam there is a day use area which provides fishermen access, playground area, restroom facilities, picnicking and scenic views.
Bluestone Dam and Lake are accessible from I-77, Exit 14 (Rt 20 N approx 25 miles) and I-64 Exit 139 (Rt 20 S approx 12 miles).
